Defect

COTTER PINS IN THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY CRIMPED ALLOWING THE COTTER PIN TO COME OUT OF THE STUD.

Consequence

BALL JOINT NUT COULD LOOSEN CAUSING SEPARATION OF THEBALL JOINT FROM THE STEERING KNUCKLE; THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERINGCONTROL AND A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Remedy

REPLACE IMPROPERLY CRIMPED OR MISSING BALL JOINT STUD NUT COTTER PINS; ALSO, REPLACE STEERING KNUCKLE ASSEMBLIES, AS NECESSARY.
