Defect
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRAVEL TRAILERS. THE SAFETY CHAINS DO NOT HAVE AN ADEQUATE LOAD RANGE TO PREVENT FAILURE IN THE EVENT THE TRAILER IS LOADED TO THE MAXIMUM GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING.
Consequence
THIS COULD RESULT IN THE SAFETY CHAINS FAILING IN THE EVENT OF A SEPARATION OF THE TRAILER FROM THE TOW VEHICLE HITCH WHICH IN TURN WOULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE TRAVEL TRAILER.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CORRECT LOAD RANGE SAFETY CHAINS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 18, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT COACHMEN RV AT 1-800-453-6064.
Verbatim reports filed with NHTSA, lightly edited for readability and with personal
information removed.
“While sitting in a camp ground and upon exiting the trailer consumer noticed that the drop tank was hanging on the ground along with tubing, bolts and other attachments. Consumer was told that the rv company wasn't responsible. Also, told that the 2005's had straps to keep this from occurring. *ak”
